Well. My car’s speedometer hadn’t worked for about a year. But I moved provinces in November so I knew I had to get started if I wanted to register it here in BC since they won’t register a car without a working speedometer. I put this task off for so long, as I had been dreading it. But I finally got to work this weekend.

Here we are getting started. There was a lot of problems with this dash. The fuel gauge would wrap all around. The odometer numbers wouldn’t display properly and of course no speedo.

Kinja'd!!!

First thing we gotta do is take that top off.One screw on the drivers side and about 12 on the passengers haha. You’re so weird chevrolet.

Kinja'd!!!

Next thing we gotta do is remove the idiotic plastic bezel. Its stiff plastic so you gotta pop it out while disconnecting the in car lighter and also the dash dimmer switch so it’s a royal pain. But the car gods smiled on me and I got it out and off no problem.

Kinja'd!!!

Screw you delphi. This is a tragical part thats fo sho.

Once that was off...well it was time. Time to take out the old dash which is here.

Kinja'd!!!

Then we put it all back together....and it was time for the big test.

Here is me turning it on

Sorry for the vertical video. I am a horrible human being I know.

After this I went on a 140 kms drive. And the gas guage worked, the odometer displayed properly and the most importantly I had a working speedometer. Bring on the next 100,000 kms.

I had to do this with the Silverado. Not because they won’t register it, but I need a speedometer. Otherwise it gets really expensive.

On the GMT800 trucks, you pop the bezel, remove two screws and the cluster comes out. Guess they knew there would be problems with the Delphu solenoids...

Now to replace the horns and radio, amongst other things.

I had a standard so it’s not such a big deal because you still know (ish) due to gears, but it is nice to have done.

Mmmm... Good old GM stepper motors. Absolute crap. There’s a shop about 15 miles south of where I live, and they’ve seriously made a living off of fixing faulty GM instrument clusters by replacing all of the stepper motors.

Depends on how fast you otherwise get speeding tickets.

Funny thing is, they’re not the only shop like that. Pretty sad reflection on GM’s choice of stepper motors...

The stepper motors are horrible. Mine started crapping out at about 160K kms or 100,000 miles. I got this dash from a cavalier with 80,000 kms so hopefully it lasts a while.

A used cluster? I hope it lasts too. *Crosses fingers*

Thanks. It only had 80,000 original kms on it so hopefully it lasts another 70K kms or so. Then my car will roll 300,000 kms which is probably sufficient.
